What to Pack

International Flights

  • British Airway flies three times a week direct from London to Dar es salaam. Other carriers to Tanzania via Europe:
  • KLM,  Royal Dutch Airlines (from Amsterdam) to Dar es salaam and Kilimanjaro.
  • Swiss (from Zurich) to Dar es salaam
  • Emirates serve Dar es salaam via Dubai.
  • African gateways to Tanzania are served by Ethiopian Airlines, Kenya Airways and South African Airways.

Passports / Visas
Most visitors require visas with an exception of certain countries. It is advisable to obtain visa in advance from Embassies or high commission. They can also be obtained on arrival at international airports and at the border crossings. Requirements may change, so you are advised to contact the appropriate diplomatic or consular authority before finalizing travel arrangements.

Coastal areas are hot humid an average daytime temperature of 30 degrees, sea breezes make the climate very pleasant from June to September. The central plateau experiences hot days and cool nights. The coast and the northern highlands has a pleasant climate from January to September, with temperatures averaging around 25 degrees. Temperatures around Mount Kilimanjaro, average a low 15 degrees during May to August rising to 22 degrees during December to March. The hottest months are from October to February. The main, long season if from mid- March to May.

The unit of currency is the Tanzania shilling. Visitors can take any amount of foreign currency, no currency declaration if required, but import and export of Tanzania currency is illegal.Most major currencies, particularly US dollars, Euro and Travel’s cheques are accepted at banks and bureau de change in the main towns and tourist areas. Credit cards mainly visa and master cards are only accepted in large establishments.

What to Wear
Except moderate temperatures in Tanzania, so light clothing is the norm. on safari avoid bright colored clothes, browns, beiges and khaki are preferred. Short-sleeve shirts or blouses and shorts are ideal, but pack a sweater as it can get chilly in the early morning and in the evening. Wear a hat to avoid sunstroke and don’t forget a swimsuit. For mountain climbing thermal underwear. Rain jacket , warm socks and sturdy climbing boots are recommended. Women should carry a wrap to cover their legs in town or villages as revealing clothes can be offensive, especially in Zanzibar and other Muslim areas. On the beach within the confines to beach hotels, normal swim wear is acceptable.
